Project Description

SHEPHARD MADZIKATIRE

Shephard Madzikatire was born in Zimbabwe in 1970. During his secondary education in private school he was introduced to stone sculpting by his cousin, the renowned sculptor Moses Masaya.

Madzikatire’s first sculptures were stylistically similar to those of his mentor. As a young artist he was learning the techniques of carving in stone, becoming familiar with the tools and the medium, as well as the imbued artistic and cultural history of finding the raw material, recognizing its essence and then carving it to release the spirit living within the stone.

Madzikatire has emerged as the most creative and talented of the young sculptores who studied under and worked with Moses Masaya. In 1998 his work was first shown by a major gallery in Harare alongside works by the recognized masters of Shona sculpture. Since that time his work has been exhibited in galleries in England, Holland, Germany and Sweden as well as the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
